About the Author
With over a million subscribers to his microblog and five million books sold, Xu Lei is one of China’s most popular and highest grossing novelists. Born in 1982, he was inspired by his parents’ travel stories to write fanciful tales about tomb raiders, which he then posted online. The series became Secrets of a Grave Robber, which now boasts eight volumes in print, three of which have been published in English. Search for the Buried Bomber, the first book in the Dark Prospects series, was hailed as China’s most spectacular suspense novel of 2010. Xu Lei currently lives in Hangzhou, China.

Anomalies in the Continuum

This continuation of Search for the Buried Bomber, which can in no way be considered a standalone story or even a sequel, starts right with the annoying cliffhanger that ended the first book: with our heroes about to watch the film they have recovered from the as yet unidentified spy/traitor in their midst, the film that was shot from a gigantic multi-engine Japanese bomber that during WWII was hauled down an underground river in northern China in pieces, laboriously reassembled at an inexplicably massive, abandoned, but still partially functioning Japanese underground base on the edge of the gargantuan abyss of the title,...
and FLOWN into it....
This decision to watch the film rather than immediately take it to their superiors sets in motion a frantic chain of events, starting with their having to escape a deathtrap set up by the spy/traitor while they were watching the film! Once again what follows is a nail biting, thrill (or scare) a minute struggle to stay alive and figure out just what is going on here (and just what went on here some twenty years ago) before massive numbers of Chinese reinforcements arrive under orders to reassemble a second gigantic multi-engine Japanese bomber found in a huge warehouse on the base and then fly it into the titular abyss....
Guess who gets "volunteered" to go on this mission....
Once again author Xu Lei demonstrates his mastery at building terror and suspense that will have you racing through this book, as well. Unfortunately, when you arrive at the end you are likely to be as disappointed as I was. As I've mentioned in reviews before, when an author sees fit to publish what amounts to an apology in the volume in question, the book is in trouble, and that is precisely the case here IMHO beginning on page 386 in what he titles a "Postscript":
"Dark Prospects was an odd series to write. My ideas about where it was going were different at the beginning, middle, and end. As time passed, the things I wanted to express changed as well. At first, it was merely a very strange adventure novel. Later on, I discovered I could transform it into a story unlike anything I had anticipated...."
Well, OK, but in that case IMHO you are obligated to go back and rewrite as necessary in order to have the whole thing make some sort of sense. It is NOT OK just to tack on a Postscript that reveals some of the things you failed to adequately reveal in your story and refuses to reveal others on the basis that you've given readers enough clues to figure it out for themselves in an underground world about which you actually state "that anything is possible". It would be different if the author had stuck to his original course of writing a completely realistic story with no paranormal events whatsoever, but after having tossed in TIME TRAVEL, it is Katy bar the door, and methinks an author is obligated to choose from all the wacky possibilities this opens up rather than simply hoping some clever fan will come up with one for him and post it somewhere. I was particularly annoyed by the author's refusal to spell out exactly what the Japanese were after, what they found, what happened to them, and why someone was so desperate to do something about it a good twenty years thereafter.
Another annoyance was the author's mishandling of the love story he introduces in this volume. Authors are free of course to provide happy endings or sad endings as they choose, but IMHO they owe us SOME kind of ending, especially in a relationship this unusual and convoluted.

not worth the effort

The story is very promising at the outset, but this reader found it frustrating and unsatisfying. Each chapter ends with a cliffhanger that never seems to go anywhere. And so much is left unresolved at the end that I wonder if the author himself had any idea where he wanted the story to go. the historical context had promise too,but comes across as an afterthought.

I may have been unkind in panning the first book by Xu Lei. There must be something lost in the translation in the sense that Westerners do not think as the Chinese do. So that once again one feels that the story is incomplete. It is readable but not terribly gripping.
