About the Author

Gary Rockswold has been a professor and teacher of mathematics, computer science, astronomy, and physical science for over 35 years. He has taught not only at the undergraduate and graduate college levels, but he has also taught middle school, high school, vocational school, and adult education. He received his BA degree with majors in mathematics and physics from St. Olaf College and his Ph.D. in applied mathematics from Iowa State University. He has been a principal investigator at the Minnesota Supercomputer Institute, publishing research articles in numerical analysis and parallel processing and is currently an emeritus professor of mathematics at Minnesota State University, Mankato. He is an author for Pearson Education and has over 10 current textbooks at the developmental and precalculus levels. His developmental coauthor and friend is Terry Krieger. They have been working together for over a decade. Making mathematics meaningful for students and professing the power of mathematics are special passions for Gary. In his spare time he enjoys sailing, doing yoga, and spending time with his family.

Terry Krieger has taught mathematics for 18 years at the middle school, high school, vocational, community college and university levels. His undergraduate degree in secondary education is from Bemidji State University in Minnesota, where he graduated summa cum laude. He received his MA in mathematics from Minnesota State University - Mankato. In addition to his teaching experience in the United States, Terry has taught mathematics in Tasmania, Australia, and in a rural school in Swaziland, Africa, where he served as a Peace Corps volunteer. Terry is currently teaching at Rochester Community and Technical College in Rochester, Minnesota. He has been involved with various aspects of mathematics textbook publication for more than 14 years and has joined his friend Gary Rockswold as coauthor of a developmental math series published by Pearson Education. In his free time, Terry enjoys spending time with his wife and two boys, physical fitness, wilderness camping, and trout fishing.

Lest We Forget.

James Clavell is renowned for his works such as _Shogun_ and _Noble House_. This darkly autobiographical novel was, so far as I am aware, his first literary work. It remains his best.
Clavell was a prisoner of the Japanese. He was held at the infamous Changi prison on the eastern end of Singapore island as described in the novel. Like the protagonist, Peter Marlowe, Clavell came from a good family, though due to his eyesight he was in the Royal Artillery, not the Royal Air Force (a little harmless wish-fulfillment, there).
I think the novel impresses so many readers due to its stark simplicity and forthrightness, particularly in describing the moral dilemmas that confront Marlowe. With the issue of survival in the balance, does morality become relative? Marlowe concludes that the only man who could answer his questions, his father, is dead-- killed on the Murmansk run. But just as Changi is rebirth for Marlowe, perhaps it is the King-- the trader with the Japanese-- who becomes Marlowe's father and answers those questions.
There are many, many layers to this book. I have read it many times and have always walked away with something new. As with the Changi experience, itself, I sense that there is never complete resolution.
Clavell died several years ago. I hope that he found peace.
Add this work to testaments like Iris Chang's, _The Rape of Nanking_, as a remembrance of what the Japanese did to the defeated.

This book really makes you think!

Of all Clavell's books, this has always been my favorite. I will not deny that Clavell tends to use the same story and characters in every novel (compare shogun with tai-pan and noble house). I love all his books (even gai-jin which few seem to enjoy), but King Rat is the best. It really makes you think about human nature, and what's really important in life. All these people grew up in a certain lifestyle, and suddenly and thrown together in a POW camp, and under brutal circumstances. I have done research on POW camps at this time,and the findings are not pleasant, so it really is interesting to see how people change, and what they really value. Seeing as how Mr. Clavell spent time in Changi himself, all that we see in King Rat is an extension of that, and so you can really appreciate what he endured. It for these above reasons that I truly enjoyed this book above his other great novels, and why I have read several times over.

Harrowing, Unforgettable...King Rat rules.

I cannot believe the previous reviewer and I had the same book. King Rat stands up there with the classic Ivan Denisovich any way you read it...for the great story, or for its cynical look into men's souls. This is truly Clavell's best work, no silly Ninja antics, no inane super TaiPans or Anjin-Sans and their ridiculous MegaMistresses...just a book about real men in real hell, simply written and therefore all the more powerful.

King Rat is a young, cocky American civilian who finds himself drafted into the Army during WWII, and ends up a POW at the notorious Changi camp. But the King isn't an ordinary POW, he is the finagler par excellance. The savvy corporal trades whatever he gets and makes a profit however he can. And he holds sway over the corrupt POW officers because he deals for them on the black market, exchanging wedding rings and wrist watches for food -- with the King always getting his cut. Is the King wrong to take money or food as his price? The officers, honorable British gentleman, have been known to double deal themselves, little tricks like giving King a fake Rolex to trade -- knowing full well the guard would punish King severely, maybe kill him, if the fraud was discovered. King isn't fooled. He just cheats right back, skimming a little more off the top.

According to the history books, Changi wasn't the worst of the Japanese POW camps. That honor is held by a place known only as 4-B, a place where 300 Australian soldiers found out what hell was like on a bad day (and if the subject interests you, this relatively unknow POW camp is worth reading about). But Changi was bad enough. British and Australians, along with a handful of yanks, faced Japanese inhumanity, constant starvation, disease, dangerous work, lack of medical care, and the kind of wet tropical heat that rots everything it touches. Even the true blue, God Save the Queen officers are corrupted by it, stealing food from the enlisted men and then playing bridge with clear consciences.

Clavell has a great way of illustrating what most of us already know: the loudest braying patriot/hero/saviour is usually the most cowardly and venal. There is nobility, however, in the worst of us...and Clavell paints us a picture that is unforgettable.

Given this degradation, what do we make of Corporal King. Is he the only truly uncorrupted soul at the camp? At least he's honest about his double dealing. And there's another side to King. Unlike the officers who eat in secret at the expense of their men, King shares his food willingly. Onone hand, he uses his friends callously, but he does his best to save those he can -- all things being equal. It's his blatant disregard for moral fakery that tarnishes him more than his actions.

King befriends a naive young English pilot, all upper class bravado and stiff upper lip. At first, King seeks to use the pilot as an interpreter, but the gradually the two become friends. The friendship makes him vulnerable.

King Rat looks in great detail at what men do what they have nothing left to lose. Some survive...one may even thrive. The rest cope and get by with whatever is inside them and a little luck. I hate to get all preachy here, because this is one hell of an exciting book. It's loaded with adventure. Although there is not enough explicit torture for the previous reviewer's tastes,I don't think most people would find it tame. This is not, however, a string 'em up and lash them book. It's about survival. Read it on any level you want, but by all means, read it.

Excellent coverage of important issues

This book is the product of an important conference held to debate current legal and ethical issues in art repatriation/restitution. All of the authors are at the forefront of their fields and present clear and readable overviews of the legality of the cases. Both sides are represented (for instance, for and against the repatriation of the Elgin Marbles). An excellent and interesting read; a necessity for people working in this area.

Ethics in Ancient Israel is a study of ethical thinking in ancient Israel from around the eighth to the second century BC. I gained a great deal from it

John Barton offers this book as a contribution to the history of ideas, ethical ideas in particular. He feels that history has hitherto been missing a chapter on Ethics in Ancient Israel; one that would stand alongside works on Greek, Roman and modern ethical ideas.

In the context of this book, Barton treats 'ethics' primarily as 'moral philosophy', as distinct from being equivalent to morals, but he does not entirely exclude consideration of the latter. And he emphasizes the importance of his book title being 'Ethics in Ancient Israel' rather than merely 'Ethics of the Old Testament'. He takes in all the relevant writings of the time that have come down to us, by no means restricting himself to those included in the Hebrew Bible, or the Old Testament familiar to modern Christians.

Another objective important to Barton is to persuade us that the texts are much more variegated and interesting than what he refers to as 'the stereotypes of slaughter of the Canaanites and unrelenting vengeance'.

Whilst setting the overall scene, I should also mention that John Barton represents himself as a modern Christian - as distinct from, among other possibilities, a modern Jewish scholar, or an atheist - and he occasionally makes reference to Christian New Testament teaching. To take one example (their number is not excessive); after a survey of the many attempts to reduce/condense/summarise the (reputedly) 613 mizvot (commandments) in the Torah - King David is said to have reduced them to 11 (principles); Isaiah to six; Micah to three ('to do justly, love mercy and walk humbly with God'); Isaiah, again, to two; Amos to one ('Seek ye Me and live'); and Habakkuk also to one ('But the righteous shall live by his faith') - it is surely entirely relevant and legitimate to refer also to the 'golden rule' attributed to Jesus: 'Do to others as you would have them do to you.'

Barton observes that Christian teaching is derived from late Israelite teaching, which is of course self-evident - except that St Paul seems to have also been aware of ideas attributed to Plato, and probably also Aristotle. (Barton in any case believes that much of what have traditionally been regarded as 'ancient' Israelite writings were at the very least re-worked - if not originated - in the Hellenic period, and that there are relationships arising from their contemporaneity.)

I digress, but in doing so give some idea of the sort of material treated here, and the thoroughness with which it is handled.

For the most part, the book is intended for, and will I think be best appreciated by those with a present or past academic relationship with theology, ethics or philosophy. For those already in the field there will be points to be taken up in debate - as John Barton uses the text of his book to answer some of his earlier critics.

Being merely an interested student of ideas, who was once much impressed by a public lecture given by John Barton, I lack the academic background and the book was for me no light read. Many pages of notes later (and having re-read extensive parts of Old Testament scriptures such as Job, Deuteronomy, Lamentations, Proverbs, Psalms....) and having looked-up Ptah-hotep, Amen-em-opet and other mysteries to those of us who haven't passed that way before, I can truthfully say I have gained a great deal from it.

About the Author

Frank Siccone Ed.D. is an educator, author, and organizational leadership consultant. For three decades he has been offering workshops to teachers and administrators throughout the country, and has conducted youth leadership training for students not only in the United States, but also from Russia, and South Africa.

 

Dr. Siccone has written a previous book on school leadership entitled, The Power To Lead: A Guide For School Administrators On Facilitating Change. His first book, 101 Ways to Develop Student Self-Esteem and Responsibility was co-authored with Jack Canfield (co-author of Chicken Soup for the Soul). His books have been translated into Chinese, Czech, Russian, and Spanish. He has taught classes and workshops at several colleges and universities including the California State University, East Bay and San Bernardino; San Francisco State University; University of California, Riverside; the University of San Francisco; and the Leadership Institute at Yale University.

 

In addition to his work in education, Frank has also consulted with an impressive list of corporate clients such as Cisco Systems, Hitachi, Intel, Pepsi Cola, Sprint, Sun Microsystems, and Walmart.com. This has been an excellent book to use with new and experienced principals. Reading, discussing and working through this book together has provided a forum for rich conversations and a renewed commitment to doing what is right and best for students. The readily available materials and activities are excellent. We are becoming better leaders because of the work we are doing together in this book.

Essential Skills for Effective School Leadership by Frank Siccone is sprinkled with many thought provoking quotes and parables. The first, however, from John Quincy Adams, sets the tone for the entire book "If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader." Siccone, from this point forward lays out a blueprint school leaders can follow for transforming a personal vision into reality.

Siccone's blueprint begins with personal development, segues into relational, and team strategies in both human factor and instrumental domains. Within the book's pages are found considerable assessments and worksheets that a leader can apply to any school improvement scenario.

His section on communication and learning styles is cogent. He continually builds on learning style principles in later chapters artfully weaving accrued self-knowledge into practical application.

Siccone's critical contribution to the literature on school leadership is his understanding of the preeminence of context. The author expounds on the concept that successful schools are products of school cultures that promote trust, collaboration, communication, and vision. I guard my copy with my life. Just about every question that can come up during the restoration of an Oval Window is answered . . . Not only does this book show the original engine, tranny, and brake stuff, but it also shows how to replace a window winder mechanism or adjust a door. It's OK but...

I think this course has some good features - it teaches you some useful phrases, without too much attention to the grammatical reasons behind them, eg., so if you wanted to just get out and have a go, you'd have something to work with. But my complaint is the same - if you want to start to understand, learn and apply rules, the grammar is spread all over the place, and only part of it - the 'easier' bits - seems to be included in the book at all. It does a bit of the accusative, eg., but not the more complicated aspects, and nowhere does it bring all the rules applying to any case together in one place, so you're left guessing a bit what the rules might be (eg. instrumental). If you wanted a phrase book, you'd buy a phrase book. You can learn some vocab, of course, but it's hard to apply it more broadly without the knowledge of the grammar to do so. The CDs are useful as far as they go, but they're not great. It's OK, but I'd expect more for the price.
