About the Author
Ikujiro Nonaka is Professor Emeritus of the Graduate School of International Corporate Strategy, Hitotsubashi University, Xerox Distinguished Faculty Scholar, University of California, Berkeley and also First Distinguished Drucker Scholar in Residence at the Drucker School and Institute, Claremont Graduate University. He received his BA (Political Science) from Waseda University, MBA and PhD (Business Administration) from the University of California, Berkeley.
Zhichang Zhu is currently a Reader in Strategy and Management, teaching Strategy for the MBA programme at the University of Hull Business School. He has held positions as the director of the PhD Program, a visiting research professor in Knowledge Management at Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, a visiting research professor in Strategy and Management at South China Normal University, a visiting research professor in International Business Management at International East-West University (Honolulu and Los Angeles), a visiting lecturing professor in Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Friedrich Schiller University (Jena, Germany) and East-West Knowledge Leaders Program, Japan-America Institute of Management Science (Hawaii, USA), an external examiner for PhD theses for the Cape Town University (South Africa) and Swinburne University of Technology (Australia).

Waste of time

It is not clear what the purpose with this book is. There is no hands-on description of Japanese or Chinese strategic management practices. Everything can be glanced from reading Fortune magazine or Wall Street Journal. Instead we get "reflection". The west is in trouble due to short-termism. Some new synthesis is needed involving ethics and all kind of stuff. The "reflection" turns out to be several hundred pages that are all over the place. Yes there is a problem with short-termism, but one must analyse the causes in detail. It is not sufficient to say greedy managers.
The authors hate details. What is wrong with details?
* What about a detailed analysis of the business units of Sony over time. With market shares and data. With data on the core technologies of Sony and how they have helped the company. With details on how each executive made changes.
* What about the generic Japanese response to South Korea? And how South Korea and Japan are responding to China.
But please give us details of interesting phenomena that are novel. Don't write things like Michael Porter's models are static. That is such a primitive critique that shows you have not understood much more than two chapters of his first book.
I enjoyed Nonaka's The Knowledge-Creating Company: How Japanese Companies Create the Dynamics of Innovation. That actually has some detailed examples of product development practices. Very rare for Japanese academic authors to provide any details. Sadly, the current book is a waste of time.
