Solid, but not spectacular textbook

I was assigned this book for use in teaching an introductory statistics course. The CD is quite good, containing a PowerPoint presentation outline for each chapter. It also has a section of excellent examples, but it only goes through the first three chapters, which is unfortunate.

Each chapter begins with a "Chapter Case Study", which I found to be worthless. The text and examples in each section & chapter are pretty good, about what would be expected from a textbook. What is different is the "Technology Instructions" inserted throughout, for doing stats with Minitab, Excel XP, and the TI-83 Plus calculator (which my school requires). It's needed, because the TI-83 manual is not very good.

Where the book could be better, for my class, is in describing how a student can verify his/her own work. Too many times students make a small mistake early in a problem, which leads to a non-sensical answer -- if the student stops to evaluate the meaning of it (for example, a probability greater than 1). Particularly in hypothesis testing, students frequently build the null and alternative hypotheses backwards, and then end up with a conclusion statement that clearly contradicts the data. While this book is very clear about a five-step approach to *doing* the test, it should have included a sixth step -- verifying that your answer makes sense!

Also, some of the problems and examples have errors, as well as vaguely worded questions. This seems to be (unfortunately) typical of all textbooks -- or maybe I'm just jaded.

Overall, it's a pretty decent book for a lower-level college statistics course. I would have given it 3.5 stars on its own. The CD is worth the extra half-star. If the CD examples went beyond chapter 3 through the whole book it would get five.

A Disorganized and Confusing Textbook.

Explanations of concepts are constantly interrupted mid-paragraph by various secondary explanations, questions and diagrams that do not tie in well with the central concept that was being explained. I find it very difficult to follow when each page is scattered with little side projects for the student to try with the cd-rom or with a calculator. Just glancing at any page it is hard to find the heart of the material. I much prefer a text that focuses on straight forward explanations of concepts rather than what seems to me as mere gimmicks.

Despite the rich subject matter of Rodin's life, there have been virtually no English-language biographical studies since the 1930s. Grunfeld's lively but uneven work updates information about Rodin's stormy romances, but is less thorough in studying the sculptor's relationships with influential political and literary figures, and seems to gloss over the effects of financial worries, relations with official salons, etc., on Rodin's artistic production. The book's racy who's who of fin-de-siecle French society make it a good addition for general collections; more reflective treatments will still be found in Robert Descharnes's August Rodin (Viking, 1967) and Albert Elsen's In Rodin's Studio (Cornell Univ. In addition to his biography on Rodin, he wrote The Art and Times of the Guitar, The Hitler File: A Social History of Germany and the Nazis, 1918-1945, and Prophets Without Honour: A Background to Freud, Kafka, Einstein and Their World.

Fabulous Biography

It is hard to believe that this book did not engender more attention or acclaim. It is absolutely the best I have ever read on Rodin the man and the artist. His life and background is presented in remarkable detail and photographs of many of his most famous works are presented.
His views on religion, love, sex, France, art - everything is here for the asking. His workings and interaction with the many artists are captured, and this is especially important since this was a particularly vibrant and intellectually fertile time in the history of art. His love for France and for all things French is expressed over and over. His letters give us a glimpse into the "real" man, the artist who finally married his lover toward the end of their lives. He was the man who challenged the world, leading the army of Romanticism forward, only to be called old-fashioned and out of date when he refused to change with the times. What a life and what a book!

No stone left unturned

I think the author has done a heroic job of pulling together all the scraps of information about Rodin's life into a single tome. Rodin himself would have approved of the characterization of himself as a misunderstood genius who worked without compromise or the least hint of encouragement until he was almost 40.

But at over 600 pages in length (of which the first 80 page cover his family history and the first 35 years of his life), this is a book for the serious student or the masochist. Rodin is carefully described in context with the turn of the 20th century artist community he lived in and the rich society patrons who bought his art, the letters they wrote, the parties they attended. A story told in an enormous amount of detail with a single unwavering spotlight.

A lucid portrait of a master and his times

François-Auguste-René Rodin was regarded by many in his lifetime as the successor of Michelangelo. His career spanned a epoch scarred by the Franco-Prussian War, Commune, fall of Napoleon III, and World War I. Despite civic calamity, he thrived with luminous contemporaries like Bonnard, Degas, Monet, Renoir, Pissarro, Gauguin, Cézanne, Matisse, Hugo, Zola, Mirbeau, Proust, Debussy, Saint-Saëns, Fauré, Chabrier, Bizet, Lalo, Gounod, and Ofenbach. How these legends flourished in adversity is the great paradox of the period.

The age, celebrated by expositions and landmarks like the controversial 300m Eiffel tower, heralded innovation that broadened travel and extended publicity. Rodin was wise enough to leverage both to become an international celebrity. His century-old legacy remains fresh, vital and expressive: in many respects it's still unsurpassed.

This amply illustrated text explores Rodin's provenance, training, influences, bohemian lifestyle, amorous liaisons, travels, influences, works, altier production, contemporaries, publicity, and honors in a lucid narrative of a seminal artist and his age.

Vickie Bryant and Camille Hess have been friends for more than 30 years, and both married Baptist ministers who graduated from Bible Baptist Seminary. Bryant, an Ohio native, began an interest in the school’s history when her husband, Dr. David Bryant, was named president of the college. She started researching its colorful past and became founder and curator of the Top O’ Hill Collection. Hess, born and raised on Fort Worth’s North Side, has managed a medical office and owned an art gallery and antique shop. Currently, she enjoys assisting Bryant in her ongoing search for information.

Colorful local history

I actually found this book in a drug store as an impulse buy. I bought it for my husband who is a big history buff. I thought he would get a kick out of the story. It is a great book about local history and includes many interesting facts and pictures. I was vaguely aware of the sordid history of the Baptist college, but I had no idea that it was as famous as it was back in the day.
The only problem I had with the book was the price. It cost me 23.00 dollars. I thought that was a bit high for a small paperback. I have since found it on amazon for less that eleven dollars so I really don't understand the price gouging for the locals.

A Bible-based review by Don the Baptist of the text “Top O’ Hill Terrace” by Vickie Bryant and Camille Hess. I read the text in its entirety.

[Note: I obtained my copy of this work during a visit to the site. This is one of very few books which I own that did not – in some fashion – originate from Amazon.]

This book will appeal to a variety of readers. Baptists first, gambling historians next, and anyone interested in the history of some of Texas’ most colorful residents will likely be pleased by this work of history.

Weighing in at a scant 128 pages this text will take very little time to read, as the story is told largely by pictures. The pictures, on the other hand, are another matter. Considerable time may be spent reviewing the historic photographs and reading the accompanying text of each.

Having lived in Arlington, Texas, I am familiar with much of the history of the Top O’ Hill and the Arlington Baptist College (the current occupant of the Hill). I offer two brief stories/illustrations.

One particular event, not included in the text, is of Fred Browning himself, a casino owner with a heart. Upon one exceptionally dismal evening when “Lady-Luck” had simply abandoned one un-named gambler, said gambler saw fit to wager the family homestead. This too was promptly lost to the casino. As the story (or “legend” if you prefer) goes, Browning – in turn – deeded the home to the gambler’s wife, at no charge, and banned the gambler from ever returning to the Hill. Nonetheless, having a heart did not save Browning from dying penniless, and sadly, his wife suffered a similar fate.

Galatians 6:7, “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.”

[Note: I am a Baptist evangelist. This will never change. Nonetheless, there is one curiosity that is somewhat uniquely Baptist to which I do not subscribe. None of this should be considered as a critique of the text; rather, the following comments are a critique of Baptists who subscribe to the particular ideology addressed.]

Compare the lower picture on page 97 of the ragged out old clunker trekking across the country to get to Bible-School with the pictures on pages 96, 101, 102, 109, etc. of the fresh-faced Bible-students all wearing suits and ties prepared to study God’s words. Can you imagine the surprise of the “clunker-pilot” and crew when they arrived at school and learn that they had to pony-up enough cash for suits, dress shirts, and shiny black shoes? Remember, they did not even have cash on-board for a jug of brake fluid.

In Honduras, my place of residence, I have preached redemption through the shed blood of Jesus Christ while I was wearing a dusty pull-over shirt. (I think they are called polo shirts, but I do not play polo, and I am not exactly sure what polo is.)

The Gospel of Jesus Christ is equally effective whether dressed in the best of Hugo Boss or the markdown bin at Walmart. Matthew 3:4, “And the same John [the Baptist] had his raiment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey.” [brackets and insert added for clarity]

Nonetheless, I have digressed.

Tom Williams is the founder of TradeGuider Systems Software (formerly Genie software) and initiator of the Volume Spread Analysis methodology- he was also a very successful syndicate trader in the U.S.Tom was introduced to day trading while working in Beverly Hills for a boss of an elite group of trading syndicates. These trading syndicates revealed their successful strategy to Tom. He gained their trust and confidence and soon became an established member of their organization. Tom began hand-drawing the charts that the pool would use to make their speculative attacks, and while doing this, he recognized a relationship between price movement, the volume, and where the price closed. The syndicates decided it was time to send Tom to the Wyckoff Chart Reading course in order for him to understand and finally get a firm grasp of exactly what was going on in the markets, especially when he drew these charts. Tom realized all the clues to make wining trades were in the charts, if you knew how to read them correctly. Williams retired from professional trading at the age of 40, taking up a number of commercial ventures during this period. Tom continued to trade as well, but became consumed with all the knowledge he had learned from the syndicate and it’s traders back in the United States. Tom Williams's book is also timeless. There is beauty
in the simplicity in how he explains how supply and demand
is expressed via price and volume, and range of the bars.

Charts are easy to see. In color and large enough
to analyze over and over.

The pages started to fall out of the book but
that is much less of a problem than books that
have charts the size of a postage stamps.

Looks like Tradeguider has published Vol 4 of this series by Tom.
Hopefully, they will sell that book thru Amazon.

Another Vampire Keeper

Tall, Dark & Hungry is another satisfying, hysterical, sexy vampire tale.
Bastien Argeneau has always been the dependable one, the got to guy, the mister fix the problems. So it was no shock that his soon to be sister in law asks that her cousin and maid of honor be put up in his home. Bastien was not expecting in all his four hundred plus years to be falling in love. Terri is a breath of fresh air, which was missing in his life.
Terri Simpson arrived early to help with her cousin Kate Leever to Lucern Argeneau. She moves into Bastien's penthouse and is surprised to find herself enjoying her host company. Bastien is a caring, thoughtful, sexy man.
As Bastien and Terri are thrown into last minute wedding preparations when Kate and Luc are called out of town, they become closer and realize how much they care. But Bastien has one little vampire secret that could change it all.
Lynsay Sands has written another fantastic book in her vampire family. The family dynamics are hysterical. The passion between Terri and Kate is so steamy and so tender.
I hope we get to see more of the wonderful family.

Canadian authors brings 3rd in series of Vamps

Bastien Argeneau is a vamp in the grumpy mold of his brother Lucern (Single White Vampire), and his lovely curmudgeon ways was going to be put to the test, with the upcoming wedding of Lucern and Kate. Too lovey-dovey wrapped up with themselves, small details of the upcoming ceremony are slipping by them. Like the arrival of Kate's cousin, Terri.
Bastien has been living in the penthouse over the Argeneau offices, quite happily alone since Lucern had moved in with Kate. But that solitude is about to come crashing down around him as the wedding approaches. First Kate pressed Bastien into picking up Terri at the airport, since the loving couple had other business. Bastien has no problem with that request. It's the second favor Kate asks of her brother-in-law to be that puts the crimp into his quiet lifestyle ¯ she needs him to put Terri up while she is in town for the wedding. Seeing no real problem putting her up for a day or two, Bastien agrees. Only after he commits to the arrangement, Kate informs him that Terri is coming earlier than the rest of her family - two weeks earlier! But it's too late to make other arrangements, because Terri is due at the airport within minutes!
Bastien has viewed the pending nuptials with mixed emotions: happiness for Lucern, disgust at their frequent public displays of being besotted and a wee dram of envy. Bastien is not about to voice this aloud fearing mommy dearest Marguerite will sharpen her matchmaking efforts. She has always insisted her children need to be mated with someone who brings the zest for living back and the Lissianne and Etienne married and Lucern well onto his way, her crosshairs has come upon Bastien and he is feeling her breath down his neck.
Bastien fears logistical problems in having Terri around for two weeks. How do you hide that you are a vampire from a woman living under the same roof for that long? It gets worse when his nephew Thomas shows up. A wannabe actor, he is preparing for a roll on Broadway playing ¯ what else ¯ a vampire! Terri is instantly charmed by Thomas who tries to lure her in helping him "rehearse". Bastien is distracted by the physical attraction to Terri, but his befuddlement is compounded by having to keep an eye on Thomas - a vamp of the old style who likes to keep his fangs sharp!
Matters grows worse as Kate's boss, Chris, has one accident after another and Kate ends up installing the editor in Bastien's apartment while his is being repaired. (Note for those loving an inside jest Chris is loosely based on Chris Keeslar, editor at Dorchester Publishing ¯ Lynsay's editor for the vamp series!). All in all, it's another delightful Argeneau romp that will delight readers of the series! In a bidding frenzy, Avon books bought the rights to the Argeneaus. Lissianna's tales in being finished with at least four more planned. So, long live the Argeneaus!

Bastian and Terri ... 5++ stars

I wish I could give this one more than 5 stars, but I felt that way about all of the Argeneau books! These brothers are hot, hot, hot! Bastian and Terri's love scenes are remarkably tender and sexy! Terri's past makes it hard for her to open her heart to Bastian, as does his. Both have been wounded in the past either by betrayal (in Bastian's case) or death (in Terri's case) and it's made them a bit skittish to give their hearts away again and risk the pain of loss. I know that in a good romance, the characters have to overcome obstacles to their love but this obstacle seems to be so real. I can, luckily, only imagine losing a spouse or parent to death but it would make it very hard to allow anyone that close again. The fact that the characters love one another enough to try is what makes this a wonderful love story.
I recommend that you read all three books (in order)! They are all terrific and not to be missed - whether you are just a vampire fan or a romance fan! There's enough of both elements for any serious fan to enjoy!!
