Great Advice from an Author Who Practices What He Preaches.

Jeb Blount's podcasts (Sales Guy Podcast) and web community (SalesGravy) have created high anticipation for his new book, and Blount does not disappoint.

Blount begins by noting that competition, technology and a focus on sales processes have created a dilution of personal interactions. Blount insists it is the salesperson, not technology or process, who sells. To remedy this lack of personal interactions, Blount offers this simple formula:

Solving customer's problems builds trust and creates positive emotional experiences, and the cycle begins again.

Two months ago, the author proved for me that his formula works. After hearing one of his podcasts, I sent a brief email to Jeb's website and asked him a question. I had never met Blount, and did not really expect a response. Within the hour, Blount sent me a detailed answer.

Excellent Book-Not just for Sales

I have read close to 50 sales books in the past 2 years that I been able to pick up a nugget or two that have helped in how I sell. This was the first book that all principles have not only helped me improve myself for the business world BUT also has helped me at home and in my personal life as well. Great book

Dont' get fooled by Amazon rating

I don't normally write book reviews, especially in English which is not my native language. I feel compelled to write this not simply because this book is useless to me but the growing reviews and ratings it seems to get. If this is the first sales/personal relationship book you ever read, it certainly could have some value. However, if you have reached Sales 101 or Dale Carnegie, there's certainly nothing you can learn from this book.

What troubles me most is the many 5 star reviews it got and low useful ratings on its negative reviews. Certainly, any bad book, or anything bad for that matter, could and will have some avid fans no matter what. However, the discrepancy between quality and user reviews is so huge here, it convinced me that there must be something fishy around here. I just don't believe someone who has gone through any sales book or sales training could found this book passing the 3 star rate, not mention 4 or 5 stars.

I have long been buying books based on Amazon user reviews, and am quite satisfied with the results. However, recently, user reviews have become less and less reliable. The 2012 best rated book Power of Habit is another example. From now on, I'll certainly take a more critical view of the book ratings, and pay more attention to critical reviews when buying books.

For those of you who are realy interested in improve inter-person relationship, I will recommend How to Talk to Anyone by Leil Lowndes. It's much useable and actionable, although some of her tips can be cheesy, especially in the second half of the book.

I had such high hopes.....sigh...

I LOVE Meg Cabot's other books, especially the ones written in the email/journal style format. I was so excited to get this book to read on a long plane ride.

UGH! It was all I could do to get through to the end. Although I found the male love interest funny, I really, really, detested the "heroine" of the book. The repeated references to her social ignorance and cat love seriously grated on my nerves. The romantic part of the plot was just beyond belief to me. I had promised a friend that I'd loan her the book when I was done, but now I've told her not to bother reading it.

I did, however, enjoy the Afterword where Meg gave insights into how she came up with the story based on the paralells to her life and the story of her own elopment. That was truly the best part of the book.

Fun day's read

As I frittered away a day with only minimal attention to chores, reading this book was an enjoyable pastime. This frivolous elopement tale was a good summer read and with my spotty memory, the fact that I remembered author Meg Cabot was a plus. The unlikely romance between maid of honor and best man eclipsed the wedding, naturally.
I'm so glad I took the time to read the ending comments to see how the story related to the author's experience, which proved that truth is stranger then fiction.

Hilarious New Work By Cabot

Thirty-year-old Jane Harris is ecstatic to know that her best friend since first grade, Holly Caputo, is heading off to the small town of Le Marche, located in gorgeous Italy to marry her true love, Dr. Mark Levine. What's even more exciting is the thought that she, Jane Harris, has been invited to witness the wedding. As it will be her frirst trip ever out of the U.S. of A, she plans on remembering every single little detail about it. Hence, she purchases a travel diary. However, when she meets who Mark is bringing along with him, Cal Langdon, a big-time journalist who just published a book about Saudi Arabia, Jane's perfect vacation is thrown off course. Cal is a pompous, precocious modelizer - someone who dates various models, then dithes them, or gets ditched by them - who, get this, doesn't know who Wondercat is. Everyone knows that Jane Harris is the creator of the lovable comic strip character, Wondercat - who just happens to be based on Jane's very own cat, The Dude. I mean, Wondercat is even being optioned for a show on Cartoon Newtwork. As if that weren't bad enough, Jane is dreading the idea of actually living with Cal for an entire week, but she'll do anything for Holly. So when tragedy strikes Holly and Mark, and threatens to ruin their wedding, Jane concocts a plan involving Cal that will ultimately save the day.

I have read Cabot's THE BOY NEXT DOOR and BOY MEETS GIRL, so was ecstatic to pick up EVERY BOY'S GOT ONE. As I expected, while not all of the characters from her two previous novels made appearances in this one, some of them did, which was a pleasure, as the characters in both of those novels were marvelous. As are the four new characters introduced in this particular novel. Jane is a fabulous character, whose passion for high-heeled shoes she can't walk in is hilarious. While the fabulous personalities of Holly, Mark, and Cal, all mesh together to create a cast of marvelous characters, that ultimately make this a fabulous book. Told in e-mails, and travel diary and PDA entries, EVERY BOY'S GOT ONE is a PRINCESS DIARIES for the adult set.

Delving deeper into Tibetan Buddhism

July 2014: Since writing many book reviews of the past, much has changed, I have discovered much more. I have come to see and have had exposed many of the deceptions and errors associated with Gnosticism, this even after becoming a Gnostic priest. My faith in Christ has been my anchor and I press on with him who shed his blood for me. I am tempted to delete many of my reviews, as I have already done; time will tell.

Lama Anagarika Govinda, a German who spent over twenty years studying at the feet of masters in Tibetan hermitages and monasteries, a member of the Kargyutpa order, brings to us much of Tibetan Esotericism in this book. In this book, Lam Anagarika Govinda clarifies many misconceptions regarding Tibetan Buddhism, mantra and more specifically, the mantra `Om Mani Padme Om'.

Essentially this book is a breakdown of the mantra `Om Mani Padme Hum' or rather `Om Mani Peme hum' according to the phonetic laws of the Tibetan language I.e. Part One `Om' The Path of Universality. Part Two `Mani' The Path of Unification and of Inner Equality. Part Three `Padma' The Path of Creative Vision. Part Four `Hum' The Path of Integration. Part Five `Om Mani Padme Hum' The Path of the Great Mantra.

The author discusses many topics such as mantra, the history of mantra and the power of the verb, the five skandhas the doctrine of consciousness, the psychic centres of the kundalini-yoga and their physiological counterparts, the chakras, physical and psychic functions of prana and the principle of motion (vayu) as starting-point of meditation, transversing the Bardo, the three currents of force and their channels in the human body i.e. Ida, pingala and susumna, the Tantras, the yoga of the inner fire in the Tibetan system of meditation (Tapas & Gtum-mo) and the Tibetan wheel of life etc. I can only recall one practice given in this book and this is a description as given in the `Tractate of the six doctrines'; see page 170-178. This practice deals with Mantra visualisation and raising the Kundalini, I make note of this here for those of you who are interested and for my benefit when I look for these pages again for when I might attempt this practice myself.

I especially enjoyed the latter part of this book which provided excellent information on thousand armed Avalokitesvara (the embodiment of active compassion) and Avalokitesvara's descent into the six realms of this world. This then followed on with information regarding the path of the Bodhisattvas I.e. the path of renunciation and sacrifice for humanity. The book ends with information on the fifth Dhyani-Buddha, the Lord of the all-encompassing wisdom, this essentially deals with `Ah', The Path of Action, "the fact that the Buddha's teachings is not some nebulous idealism, a chasing after eternal but unattainable ideals, but a doctrine of self realisation, of action, a practical doctrine, a path that can be trodden by all who are seriously bent on its aim."

This book also clarifies the differences between Hindu and Tibetan yoga. "A comparison of the Hindu Tantras with those of Buddhism (which are mostly preserved in Tibet and which therefore have long remained unnoticed by Indologists) not only shows an astonishing divergence of methods and aims, in spite of external similarities, but proves the spiritual and historical priority and originality of the Buddhist Tantras." Pg 94

As a student of Gnosis, this book filled in some blanks for me. I plan to continue reading other books on Tibetan Buddhism and especially those books made reference to by Lama Anagarika Govinda in this book I.e. `Tibet's Great Yogi Milarepa', `Tibetan Yoga & Secret Doctrines', `The Tibetan Book of the Great Liberation' (Evans-Wentz) and also `The Serpent Power' (Avalon, Arthur).

Rather technical, good scope

This is a fine book by a 20th century practitioner, a German who became a Buddhist monk in a SE Asia monastery and traveled through Tibet with his wife Li Gotami (who published a book of fascinating photographs). The author is probably best known for both this work, which is probably a modern classic, and for "The Way of the White Clouds" a more personal description of Buddhism. He also wrote "A Living Buddhism for the West." The latter two books reflect his personal approach making them more easily comprehended and accessible than many texts from Tibetan Buddhist masters. This book, however, is far less accessible, but its topic may preclude a more personal approach. It covers a lot of territory though it is quite technical in many places. It provides an extensive and detailed description of the five Dyani (meditation) Buddhas and their families-the best I've seen. Many modern texts merely allude to these or mention one or two of them (e.g. Akshoba or Amitabha). It's not an easy read.

If you wish to explore the word and symbol, this profoundly spiritual volume leads one there. Om, universal consciousness, and all the dhyana Buddhas are presented with clarity and understanding. What's more, the poetry in which Lama Govinda moves and winds this classic work is a tribute to the man's artistry in painting wisdom as something within everyone's reach.
