Great book!

This book is everything i wished to find in review books and it should be an example to the rest .

Pros:
* Great clear images without and with annotations . ( I've always wanted that in some cases with subtle findings)
* The case and the discussion are on opposite pages instead of reverse pages which make it easy to read.
* Cases are of different difficulty levels and coded with stars so Juniors and seniors will find what they need.
* Discussions in Q&A are to the point.

Sharks ... evil and primitive creatures charging from the depths to attack their prey with savage ferocity, or beautiful and efficient predators? It is difficult to separate the popular myths from the truth about sharks because, quite simply, there are still considerable gaps in our knowledge of how they live.

In Shark: A Photographer's Story, Jeremy Stafford-Deitsch helps to fill some of these gaps. He presents here the results of three years' dedicated effort to record the appearance and natural behavior of as many different shark species as possible. To photograph sharks in their natural environment he journeyed from the coral atolls of the Red Sea and the South Pacific, to the vast open ocean off Hawaii and the Californian coast, and then on to Florida and the warm tropical waters of the Bahamas.

His story is an exciting blend of travel narrative and natural history, and we share the full range of his feelings as he encounters his quarry ... exhilaration as a massive, rarely photographed whale shark passes slowly overhead like a spaceship, and sudden horror at the realization that the frenzied gestures of a grey reef shark are the final stages of a serious threat display. He swims with oceanic whitetips escorting a school of pilot whales, joins a huge group of shoaling hammerheads, and photographs feeding great whites at extremely close quarters.

Used but in good condition

When I bought this I was a bit skeptical of the condition the seller described but I was pleasantly surprised! The book itself was in perfect condition. The only flaw was the cover which showed some wear which is why I only gave it 4 stars.

A Shark Lover's Dream

With more pictures than you can wave a frozen tuna at and enough detail about the adventures behind their creation to make Cousteau jealous, this tome on the wolves of the sea will satisfy the shark fan in your life. The chapter on the Great White Shark was my particular favorite with pictures lifelike enough to make me reconsider my upcoming dive trip to South Africa. In fact, the best compliment I can give this book is that the nightmares I have about sharks are illustrated with pictures from this book!

For Shark Enthusiasts A Must

Scuba divers will be interested in Mr. Stafford-Deitsch's opening essay in which he discusses why he made all the dives in this book ALONE, in violation of the first rule of diving. His discussion of his decision to do this is certainly provocative.
The photographs are splendid and equally so is the range of shark species he finds and photographs.
Although I was intially interested in the chapter on Great Whites, which is excellent, I was left breathless at reading and seeing his adventures off Sanganeb Atoll in the Red Sea. He happened upon a rarely observed schooling formation of Hammerheads and was the first to photograph them.
I no longer have my copy as a student of mine a few years ago was so taken by it when I loaned it to her, I had to "spread the wealth."
A wonderful book.

From a physics student.

The book was excellent, starting with the basics of sets and topology and building quickly to the traditional subjects of calculus. I particularly enjoyed the way the author was able to draw attention to the key ideas that come up again and again, the mean value theorem for example. I have never seen a better view of the foundation of calculus, and this book is never leaving my shelf.

Advanced Calculus

This book is one of the better written books on advanced calculus. The diagrams and figures are well done and specific to the examples or concepts being presented. However, this is not for a college student who is trying learn how to solve typical engineering problems. This is a theoretical math book of proofs and identifying limiting conditions, etc. The Exercise problems involve proving bounding characteristics of functions, showing where there is convergence or divergence, and discussing the "whys and hows" of non-specific surfaces or multiple integrals. You will not be reading about or solving problems involving rolling spheres, projectiles, fluids in motion, planetary motion or the conservation of energy. To paraphrase Jeff Foxworthy, "If you can solve the exercise problems based on what you read in the previous section, then you are probably a mathematician." It is still a very well written and organized book - but definitely for the theoretically minded student.

Deeply poignant

Reading the early passages in Chopin's letters, one is almost heartbroken by the youth, the enthusiasm, the childlike good humor evident therein. Chopin at 17 was a wide-eyed kid from Warsaw with unparalleled musical talent and his whole life in front of him, the world apparently his oyster. To read his letters in subsequent years -- after the Russian invasion of Poland that stranded him in Paris; the abortive betrothal to Maria Wodzinska; the complex and finally tragic relationship with George Sand -- is to watch a man reach adulthood step by step. Though they contain only small, tantalizing glimpses of Chopin's opinions on music, the letters make for an effective counterpoint to his immortal compositions. The man who wrote the great Ballades and Scherzi was just a man like any other: he was annoyed at lazy servants, he unconsciously exploited his friends, he wanted to move in the circles of great aristocrats, he had provincial and prejudiced opinions. The lesson is banal, but true, and vividly made clear in these letters.

If you REALLY want to get to know Chopin read his letters!

These letters make wonderful reading. Chopin's writing style is direct, at times humorous, and gives a great insight in his daily life, from his very young years untill just before his death in 1849.
In these letters he does not much write about his art (he hardly did that anyway: most of his thoughts on music are written down by his friend Eugene Delacroix in his journal, based on their conversations).
These letters cover a wide variety of subjects: holiday-planning, chit-chat,long letters to his sister Ludwika, letters to his lover George Sand and her children, rude business letters (no romantic dreamer here!),sad letters, passionate letters of a young Chopin,etc.
If you want to get to know the person Chopin this is a must-read.

Good buy

Shipped fast. Good condition. The one thing that was sort of strange, is that it dosen't show any letters that were sent to Chopin himself, so a lot of his replys do not make sense. Also every time that he wrote two or more consecutive letters to the same person, it is addressed "To the Same" so you have to look all the way back to the first. In the case of Juliana Fontana this can span for more than ten pages.

About the Author
ROBERT E. RICKLEFS is Curators' Professor of Biology at the University of Missouri–St. Louis, where he has been a member of the faculty since 1995. His teaching at Missouri, and previously at the University of Pennsylvania, has included courses in introductory and advanced ecology, biogeography, evolution, and biological statistics. Bob’s research has addressed a broad range of topics in ecology and evolutionary biology, from the adaptive significance of life-history traits of birds, to island biogeography and the community relationships of birds, herbivorous insects, and forest trees. In particular, he has championed the importance of recognizing the impact of large-scale processes on local ecological assemblages of species. Bob has published in numerous journals including Science, Nature, PNAS, Evolution, Ecology, Ecology Letters, and the American Naturalist. His contributions have been recognized by honorary doctorates from the Université Catholique de Louvain (Belgium), Aarhus University (Denmark), and the University of Burgundy (France). He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences of the United States. Bob published the first edition of The Economy of Nature in 1976 and is joined by a coauthor for the first time with this seventh edition.
