I purchased this book cause I been following Jelena's bodybuilding career. Jelena is in perfect shape as a bodybuilder while still keeping her feminity. I was hoping this book would give me Jelena insight on diet as well as bodybuilding....it had done that and soooo much more. Every woman should read this book and hopefully Jelena would inspire you as she has for me. I now have the knowledge of healthy dieting along with workout tips and other important things that are mentioned within her book. I TOTALLY recommend it.

It is clear that this book contains important and interesting results obtained through a long time period, beginning with the classical Bernoulli's law of large numbers, and ending with very recent results concerning convergence of martingales and absolute continuity of probability measures. Let us note especially that the great number of ideas, notions and statements in the book are well-motivated, explained in detail and illustrated by suitably chosen examples and a large number of exercises. Thus, the present book is a synthesis of all significant classical ideas and results, and many of the major achievements of modern probability theory. In the whole it is a welcome addition to mathematical literature and can become an indispensable textbook for courses in stochastics.

This book contains a systematic treatment of probability from the ground up, starting with intuitive ideas and gradually developing more sophisticated subjects, such as random walks, martingales, Markov chains, the measure-theoretic foundations of probability theory, weak convergence of probability measures, and the central limit theorem. Many examples are discussed in detail, and there are a large number of exercises. The book is accessible to advanced undergraduates and can be used as a text for independent study.

To accommodate the greatly expanded material in the third edition of Probability, the book is now divided into two volumes. This first volume contains updated references and substantial revisions of the first three chapters of the second edition. In particular, new material has been added on generating functions, the inclusion-exclusion principle, theorems on monotonic classes (relying on a detailed treatment of “π-λ” systems), and the fundamental theorems of mathematical statistics.

About the Author

Albert N. Shiryaev is Chief Scientific Researcher and Professor of Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics at the Steklov Mathematical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Head of the Department of Probability Theory in the Mechanics and Mathematics Faculty at Lomonosov Moscow State University. He is the author of several books, including Problems in Probability [translated by Andrew Lyasov], Optimal Stopping Rules [translated by A.B. Aries], and Statistics of Random Processes [with Robert S. Liptser]. He was the recipient of the A.N. Kolmogorov Prize of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 1994 and the A.A. Markov Prize in 1974.

Dmitry M. Chibisov is Leading Scientific Researcher and Professor of Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics at the Steklov Mathematical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the journal Mathematical Methods of Statistics.

Good - but not for everyone

This is a very informative book, but it is not for everyone. If you want to know something about the politics, economy, and emerging culture of caste, then this book will give you some good information on that. It is very much involved in quantitative methods, and concerned with situating itself in the literature in the field. For this reason, it may not be for everyone. At the senior level of college or in graduate school I could see this book having the most use. Others, who are not as professionally involved, may want something more friendly or readable. The writing style is not the best – at times it seems empty, but at others it is insightful and gives some rich data. If you think you can get past any or all these limitations, then this book may be for you.

Another Great Agatha Christie

Mrs. McGinty's Dead: Hercule Poirot Investigates is the usual interesting, suspenseful read by Agatha Christie. I love her books and always enjoy reading them. The only difficulty I found with the book was the long list of possible suspects who all seemed to be a Mrs. Had trouble keeping track of them after a while. However once again I was surprised when the culprit was finally revealed. Another great Christie book.

About the Author

Sally J. Rogers, PhD, is Professor of Psychiatry at the MIND Institute at the University of California, Davis. She is a pioneering autism researcher known for her work on early intervention for preschoolers, imitation deficits, family interventions, and autism in infancy. With Geraldine Dawson and colleagues, Dr. Rogers developed the Early Start Denver Model, the treatment approach that is the basis for this book.

Geraldine Dawson, PhD, is Professor of Psychiatry and Director of the Duke Center for Autism and Brain Development at Duke University. She served as Founding Director of the University of Washington Autism Center. An internationally recognized autism expert with a focus on early detection, intervention, and brain plasticity in autism, Dr. Dawson is a passionate advocate for families. She is coauthor of An Early Start for Your Child with Autism and A Parent's Guide to Asperger Syndrome and High-Functioning Autism. Laurie A. Vismara, PhD, is a clinical research scientist at the MIND Institute at the University of California, Davis, and a board-certified behavior analyst. My son was diagnosed with autism a couple of months ago and I didn't really know where to begin. We signed him up for therapy and we had to go to a session for parents (highly recommend any parent with an autistic child does the same). This book is great because it's aimed at parents and written in an easy-to-understand language. The first couple of chapters go through what many of us have gone through using a family's story of how their journey began and progressed. What I found unique about this book is that it really made me feel like I'm not alone and that there are people out there that get what we as parents are going through.

This was recommended to me by one of our doctors, and of the several books on autism I have read in the last year since receiving the diagnosis, this was the best. I would definitely recommend it.

Elementary Algebra Concepts and Applications

I found this book to be somewhat hard to comprehend, and this is possibly because I've been unable to truly grasp the concept of algebra this first year. (Many eons ago when I was in school, algebra was not required and I did not take it). I would have liked to have had more examples broken down in a step by step fashion for the beginner student but all in all, the book was ok. The book's cover and interior pages were in very good condition.

OVERPRICED! Sadly not worth the price of admission at its current price point

Firstly, I would like to give the author credit for offering some different methods to what one may be used to when it comes to strength training. I will admit that I did not learn anything new but then again, after 10 years in the field, it becomes difficult to come across anything you have not seen before. However, its not the author's fault that his publisher overpriced his book.

With that out of the way, let me let you in on a little secret. The majority of reviews online and the push for the book comes from folks with vested interest in the book selling or are individuals who did marketing for the publisher. There is nothing wrong with this in and of itself other than all the fluff and extra hard selling they are doing on it. I came to find out about this book because I received about three emails from three different people whom I have purchased training and or fitness related items from in the past. The publisher did a great job generating buzz and marketing the book. The book is decently written but its more fluff than content. At this price, I would have expected way more than what I received. It was a disappointment for this reason. I need to once again reiterate that I am not bashing the author or his methods, but just that I feel that the way the book was marketed is a bit disingenuous and misleading. For example, the way the promotion is written you'd think this was truly something cutting edge and new you have never heard before (not the case) also the pictures are much larger than they need to be and its apparent to anyone who has read training books in the past its just to fill up pages. The pictures don't offer any detail to the movement that a smaller footprint sized picture would offer. I was able to finish the book in a day just reading a few pages here and there whenever I had breaks and before bed on the night I got the book. Its a 237 page book that could have easily been maybe 150 pages or probably less? Did I mention its overpriced? Can you get my impression of feeling like I got burned? :-)

Bottom line is, sadly it is just not worth what they are asking for. Perhaps at 1/2 the price, sure, maybe. There are much better books here on Amazon for less dollars. In these times where you have to watch what you invest in, I'd look elsewhere. Not to mention that this company has a history of overpricing things as well. Buyer beware. there are books available for half or less than half the price here which will be more accessible and get you similar results. I don't want to spoil the book as I am sure the author worked hard to bring this information to light but the implements needed to do some of the training, while simple/easy to create, are probably inconvenient and/or not practical for most people to use or create. Furthermore, from the perspective of the price you have to pay for this, stick with original source work from Pavel Tsatsouline as you will have a wider variety of immediately usable exercises to perform. Jon Bruney writes well and offers some good information, but the publisher messed up on trying to squeeze the consumer. Its just not worth the price. I rarely write reviews for lack of time but I had to throw my 2 cents out there. For all these reasons I can't with a good conscious give this book a higher rating. If it were not for the price and publisher trickery, I'd give it 3 stars.

Message to publisher and marketers, please get back to making good products and reduce the amount of this over use of backing each others products. You are diluting your brands and making yourselves out to look sleazy. Give the consumer a little more credit, we can see whats happening and its only a matter of time before folks start calling you out on this. Not everyone is drinking the kool-aid. You know who you are.

Challenging program for huge strength gains

Review – Neuro-Mass: The Ultimate System for Spectacular Strength by Jon Bruney

Neuro-Mass is a very well written, very well illustrated, very well thought out presentation of a rather complicated and different approach to strength development. Instead of lots and lots of iron over lots and lots of time, Jon has combined three approaches to strength into a system to jump start your body into wild strength and mass development.

First Jon takes what he calls a “neuro-set” and defines it well. A neuro set is 1) Grinds, 2) dynamic power drills, and 3) isometrics including some very slow lifts. Grinds are slow, controlled exercises that place resistance on large muscle groups. Dynamic power drills are rapidly executed movements. Isometrics are either static holds or very, very slow minimal ROM movements. Jon combines both kettlebells and body weight exercises in all three parts of the neuro set.

Then Jon lays out an extensive set of kettlebell and body weight exercises. These are varied, imaginative, and useful. The book is well worth the price just for the variety of exercises included. All the standard exercises are included. But also some things we don't expect or see much of elsewhere like “double kettlebell crucifixes,” “Kettle bell crush inverted row” “ballet squats,” “side step squats,”“double kettle bell outside the leg swings,” “anchor sprints” with the KB held either close to chest or extended out in front of the chest while sprinting, “double KB jump squats,” “double KB toe curl,” “double KB bear crawl.” This list goes on and on with large clear pictures and simple easily followed directions for each.

Jon lays out a four day a week program. There are options to do either a two day a week or three day a week. Here the user will have to use the book as a reference to choose the exact exercises. Each training day one does one neuroset for the upper body, one neuroset for the lower body, both in multiple rounds. Then add one neuroset from the supplementary sets (abs, grip or calves). Also an optional neuro-burner set can be added to the end of the workout. These instructions are clear and easily followed. There are some hybrid neurosets for special area of body emphasis.

Jon ends the book with recommending dynamic stretching and mobility drills for warming up. These are not included in this book. He also includes neuro striking techniques such as body slapping, body hacking, body tapping, and for the advanced, body pounding. Jon states one should stomp one's feet into the ground one time before each workout.

Will this work? I did not interrupt my current program to try it out. But Jon does have the credentials to write this book on how he trains for spectacular, world record setting strength. The program easily passes the three tests – 1) volume. 2) intensity. 3) time under tension. Following this program will require a fairly high starting conditioning level. The program is intensive and will require concentration and dedication and discipline – but so does every other successful program. Yes, the program will work as described.

Note that Marty Gallagher in the Foreword warns that Jon Bruney is a protege of John Brookfield. Marty notes that Brookfield, Bruney, Steve Justa and other iron pioneers champion “strength/endurance” or “sustained strength.” And, Marty Gallagher points out that major league, self inflicted physical discomfort (as differentiated from the pain of injuries) is needed to excel in sustained strength. Marty quotes Arnold Schwarzenegger “Those that can stand deep repeated trips into the pain zone might become a champion – those that cannot have no chance of ever excelling.” In other words, Marty is saying, “This is going to hurt!”

Not for Beginners....

While the format, terminology and abundance of pictures in it's simplicity in the book may seem like it was for the novice trainee, the concept and technique when applied into your physical training regime is definitely not.
Jon Bruney has spelt it out in this book so that even the average musclehead will get it, but this is definitely not a "musclehead" protocol.
If you are an intermediate or advanced trainee (ie know what you're doing) give the Neuro-Mass a try. :o)
More muscle and better athleticism - who doesn't want that?
