DOE step by step with examples

DOE is the set of process improvement tools for studying more than one factor in a single experiment. The 92 page book is straight forward with many examples to show the methodology for setting up 2, 3 and up to 31 factor experiments which according to the author will cover >90% of the DOE requirements.

The workbook is filled with case studies and examples from manufacturing problems which guide you through the process and help evaluate your understanding before moving to the next section. The mathematical/statistical equations are a bit intimidating but these can be set-up in a spreadsheet. The author says that these DOE tools can be used on office or sales processes but never gives an example of one.

The value in this book is if you are doing a quality or six sigma project. Also, it will be of value if you are working in industries like chemical or mining, where yields are the key to success. The book shows the equations to use, the eight steps for analysis and the logical steps to creating an experiment. Additionally, it includes an appendix with T (95% confidence level) and F (degree of freedom) values which are necessary references if you attempt to do this without a statistical software package.

excellent for first time application

I am conducting experiments with the the intent of optimizing output with 13+ control variables. I have an engineering degree, but we never covered design of experiments method. Prior to reading this book, I was attempting to guess theoretically what outcome I would expect, and then testing the theory. From experience, I knew the results wouldn't quite match up, so I was changing just one variable at a time - then it dawned on me there must be a better way. After some preliminary research, I realized the Plackett-Burman method was what I needed to apply. Most of the material I found too involved and would have required a great deal of time to process. This book had me understanding the method and its limitations after just a few days. It does not explain EVERYTHING - some information it just gives you and explains how to apply it. But that is the trade off to have a resource I was able to start producing meaningful results quickly. Some warnings: watch out for a few typos (especially in the formulas) - recommend doing all the examples to have a handle on the method. Definitely a beginners book for the statistically educated - it begs further research, but is an excellent start if you want to apply it quickly, but want to have SOME understanding as to how it works.

This book is headed in the right direction...

This is the second least complicated book I have ever read on DOE. Thanks Larry for writing the book! I wish that it had MANY more examples showing each DOE type he covers...Also, there is a need to FURTHER elaborate in simpler terms all of the concepts. I am still not understanding why a DOE book can't come out that isn't easy to read!

About the Author
Ferid Murad was born in Whiting, Indiana. Working concurrently on an M.D. and Ph.D. in Pharmacology, Dr. Murad graduated with both degrees from Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, in 1965. His many honors include the Alfred S. Maschke Award for Clinical Excellence from Case Western Reserve University in 1965. He has held several distinguished positions, including Acting Chairman in the Department of Medicine and Acting Division Chief, Division of Respiratory Medicine at Stanford University. He currently is CEO and President of Molecular Geriatrics Corporation in Lake Bluff, Illinois. Dr. Murad is married and has five children.

Scholarly Rendering of the Sworn Book of Honorius

This is an amazing root level resource for many grimoires we are more familiar with, and yet, it's totally unlike anything in the Solomon cycle of works.

At its heart is a magic based on Christian piety. The work centers around an lengthy operation to initiation, similar to Abraham's Book of Sacred Magic. But in comparison of those two works, this is the completely opposite approach. Abraham advises you to write your own prayers, Honorius gives it to you word for word. While Abraham sets you in a process of self-reflection, Honorius assaults the ego with endless prayers, orations, and barbarous names. Ritual and cosmology are stressed in the Honorius System with a complexity that Abraham would have had little patience for. Honorius is much more focused on planetary magic, and working with elementals.

For the Enochian magician, this is a great chance to look at a document that was formative to Dee's system, including the information and variations on the Great Seal of God. Angel magicians looking to expand their lists will find angel names here that are not found elsewhere. Magic historians will be delighted with the synthetic fusion of Merkava mysticism with Catholic ritual, and Byzantine Christianity in general. This early fusion of ideas planted fertile seeds in the Western magic current that can be seen reflected in hundreds of manuscripts in libraries throughout Europe. Ritualists will find the magic whistle completely unique to modern grimoire work, as well as the use of concave circles or "pits" to evoke evil spirits, and an interesting take on planetary calling directions with basically a seven pointed compass.

The reason much of this material was lost to the mainstream magic circles of the time, is that to obtain the book you first had to give an oath that your copy would be destroyed upon your death. It's a wonder this work wasn't lost to us entirely.

As usual Joseph Peterson does a great job footnoting and explaining the context of phrases and customs unfamiliar to the modern reader. His insight into the mediaeval mind is a valuable resource and he is generous in sharing it. Having said that, there is less footnoting here, than you may have come to expect if you have other works by Peterson. The Latin of the work appears on the left and the translation on the right.

The original author was very erudite and familiar, or at least exposed to a variety of mystical and spiritual traditions. Peterson's treatment of the text is scholarly, but the author of the original work was equally so. While the endless prayers, orations, masses, and the like are likely to weary the modern reader, beyond that is a brilliant synthesis of spirito-magical art.

A suitably gritty crime noir

The new crime noir novel from Ed Kurtz is certainly long on style, even If I felt it was a bit lacking in substance. I think that may come from a lead character that I just couldn't connect with. Nick Drake is a killer, a low-rent hit man who fell into his line of work, more or less, by accident.

Nausea is told in two separate story-lines. The current timeline and one detailing the events which lead to the early years of Nick's, now, long time profession.

The writing is solid as is the way the story is told...

A few minutes later he ground the butt under the heel of his boot and narrowed his eyes at the purplish ribbon of the gathering dusk. The air was getting a bit nippy now that summer had ended; even this far from town he could smell woodsmoke. It was an odd, familiar smell, a comforting one. He gazed at the shooting stars made by the headlights of the semis on the freeway an wished he could vomit again."

Nausea is a suitably gritty tale. The writer does an excellent job in creating atmosphere and there is definitely a solid story here. It just wasn't one I found to be particularly compelling. I much preferred his previous release from Darkfuse, Angel of the Abyss.

Nausea. Can you stomach it?

Nausea is the second book that I have read by Ed Kurtz. Although Angel of the Abyss is still my favorite by him (and one of my favorites in general), I rather enjoyed Nausea.

The book starts out a little slow and I wasn't sure I would like it until around 20% on my Kindle. From there, I can't remember keeping track of how far along I was. I also wasn't sure about a puking hit man, but somehow Kurtz pulls it off - with a lot of vomiting - but no hiccups.

Nick is a cold and ruthless hitman, who does whatever it takes to get the job done. Until one day after a hit, he pukes his guts out. From then on he can't seem to stomach - literally - the job he has done for the last almost twenty years. Determined to prove that he hasn't gone soft, Nick decides to put his own hit out on a random young couple he happens upon.

Can you stomach Nausea? You may want to read this with a side of Tums, but you will be glad that you did. Ed Kurtz may be a little sick but he's never boring and writes a damn good story.

Well Done Thoughtful Thriller--Highly Recommended

I received an advance review copy of this novel from the publisher (Darkfuse) through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I have been reading Darkfuse publishing titles for a couple of years now and can say that they are a reliable source of quality horror and crime/noir. Their output is usually of the literary variety, at least as much or even mostly about characters as about the plot/action. Nausea by Ed Kurtz is no exception. I also enjoyed his prior Darkfuse release, Angel of the Abyss.

Our protagonist (Nick Drake) is a hitman. It isn’t just his profession. It is his life. His conscious existence is spent moving from one named target to the next. No outside life. No one waiting at home. No time for thought outside of the current target. When he thinks about his favorite movies he can only remember films from his childhood. He hums tunes from the Nat King Cole and Johnny Mathis. His forward development as a person stopped when he took his first contract.

When you think of a hitman your mental image is of a sociopath with ice in his veins. No thought beyond the hit. No emotions. Our protagonist is aware of this model as well and he tries to convince himself that he fits this bill and for the most part he has succeeded. Problem is that it isn’t working anymore. He calls himself a sociopath, but it is clear that he is being torn up inside by conflict. Sociopaths don’t worry about the state of their soul or if they even have one. Sociopaths don’t obsess over the lives of the people they just murdered. Cold as ice hitmen don’t throw up after a killing. After 35 hits he is falling apart, emotionally and physically.

Structurally, the novel tells two stories at the same time. Nick Drake’s transition from 19 year old drifter to contract hitman and the story of how he falls apart years, and many hits, later. The beginning and the end. It works very well. Through the story the reader sees how Nick’s existence is basically shaped and governed by the will of strong women: his boss (with the Freudian moniker “mother”) and a psychotic repeat customer (in that she frequently utilizes his services). It is evident that Nick’s life has been shaped by his struggles against the powerful people that control him and his inability to escape their dominion over him. His struggles for independence and identity provide the depth beneath the surface of this fast paced and gritty noirish thriller.

Highly recommended. 4 stars.

Unequivocally the best shifter novel I have ever read

This is hands down the best shifter novel I have ever read, bar none.
I was a little nervous typing that, when I think back on the amazing stories I've read. But there's no way I can't say it.
TJ Klune so expertly breaks your heart, makes you feel so much for his characters. I've been on a bit of a shifter binge lately, when I saw this was coming out only a few days ago. Honestly, I think I am going to have to take a break from shifters, because there is NO WAY I will find anything as satisfying. The world building, the characters (not just a handful, but complex, diverse characters, a whole pack of them), the writing, the emotion. Ox and Joe have me completely in love. I love the fact that you can see the characters learning and growing, and building their family. I thought I loved TJ Klune after BOATK, but wow. I just KNOW I will be fangirling hardout for the next few months. I don't have a book blog, but you can bet your bum I'll be recommending and sharing this with anyone who will listen.

An epic, moving, and suspenseful tale.

This is one of the better "werewolf" books I've read in a while. It's an epic tale spanning over a decade, engaging the readers with well-developed and compelling characters and thoughtful and heart-tugging prose.

The book, while romantic, is not a typical romance. It spans a length of time surpassing a decade as the two main characters, one of which is a child when they met, develop and reconcile their feelings for each other and their duties to their pack. Ox is human, but not "just" human. Being drawn into their pack, he can feel the ties to each member as they start to develop. As time progresses, his role in the pack changes, and though he was taught by his absentee father that he's nothing special, he gradually discovers he's much more than he had thought and is everything his new family/pack believes him to be.

The shifter world is examined in a new light. Gone are the Omegas who are submissive and empathetic. Here, they are the rogue wolves who have given into their basest instincts. Here, they are the monsters. Witches are men or women who have magical abilities, and packs sometimes include one. Like the wolves, witches can lose touch with their humanity as magic can bring you to dark places. Ties in a pack are felt amongst its members as near-physical strings linking them all together, and Ox can feel these developing, sometimes being surprised when new people who are close to the pack are recognized to suddenly belong to the pack.

There's humor, heartache, love, danger, suspense, and thoughtful prose. The characters live and breath, and the words pull at your heart at times. It's a long book, and it moves at a steady pace, always engaging the reader and pulling them into this fantastical world. If you're a fan of shifter stories, and want something that's more than just a run-of-the-mill shifter romance, get this book. For that matter, if you have any interest in fantasy at all, get this book. It's one of my favorites.

GIVE A TRY EVEN IF U DO NOT LIKE SHIFTER TALES- U MIGHT CHANGE YOUR MIND ON THIS ONE

Admittedly , I am a Klune addicted reader. His writing continues to develop with surprising results. There still exists amusing humor in his work but now
tackling different genres with relish. Frankly, I am not a fan of shifting novels or wolf packs. I usually shy away. However, being Klune I was curious.
Believe me I was not disappointed with the choice.

Basically, the story is about an outcast taken in a by a wolf pack. Really, though, it's more than this. Despite the fantasy it has elements that touch the human condition of belonging, living with one's demons, bonding and above all love. I am amazed how Klune can take a story and connect emotionally with one's humanity.

Yeah, I certainly like this one. Also, I noticed Klune did keep his word about the sequel to Withered +Sere coming in August. Kudos to you TJ .
