Remarkably brilliant for its time.

In this 1917 book, the late George McCready Price, Professor of Chemistry and Physics at Lodi Academy, and author of several previous books, examines from a Biblical perspective the arguments for creationism and evolution. Given the science of 1917, his exposition is brilliant. However, the science of the 21st century is able to explain many things that were hidden (as in a glass darkly) in 1917. For example, Price states that the “protoplasm in the brain of a bird is the same as that in its toes; and no metaphysical subtleties about heredity have ever explained why the one does a different work from the other.” His solution is divine intervention. He was unaware of DNA; Mendelian genetics was in its infancy, and the electron microscope was 14 years in his future. Although Einstein’s most famous equation, E=MC*2 had been published in 1905, it appears that Price was unaware of its significance. He did not know that supernovas were continuously creating heavy elements, essential to life as we know it.
He relies heavily on the inerrancy of the Bible, especially Hebrews 4:3 “the works were finished from the foundation of the world,” in what can gently be called “special pleading.”
He may have been the first person to apply the second law of thermodynamics as an argument against evolution, an argument now known to be in error. His arguments predate Fred Hoyle’s since-refuted argument that abiogenesis and evolution were equivalent to a tornado sweeping through a junkyard to create a Boeing 747 aircraft.
Quod erat demonstrandum (QED), which Price uses in the classical sense to signal the completion of the proof, has been replaced by Quantum Electrodynamics, as science has marched on. Nevertheless, the book is a worthwhile and interesting read for anyone on either side of the creationism-evolution discussion.
