About the Author
Scott H. Ainsworth (Ph.D., Washington University) is associate professor of political science at the University of Georgia. Throughout his work, he has combined formal political theory with more traditional, historical approaches. His work on interest groups and lobbying has appeared in a wide array of journals, including the American Journal of Political Science, Legislative Studies Quarterly, Journal of Politics, Political Behavior, Theory & Decision, Journal of Theoretical Politics, and Social Science History.

what is an interest group ?

Ainsworth studies the most prominent interest groups in the United States, looking at how they try to influence legislatures in the making of public policy and setting of government expenditures. You may already be familiar with the NAACP, as an example.
More generally, he even invokes some game theory to explain the actions that an interest group might take. This digression is fairly rudimentary, and you don't need any background in the subject to follow it.
Other issues include what motivates people to join such groups. Along with the free rider aspect, where you, as a person or group, do nothing but let others advocate and lobby, so that you also derive some benefits from their actions.
